History shows that green tea has been around for more than 4,000 years which makes it the oldest herbal tea known.
Though it was popular for centuries in Asia, its popularity only reached the western world in recent years. Its many beneficial nutrients have proven to prevent and fight disease – including cancer. Not only does it provide a boost in immunity, but its powerful components will help any dieter lose body fat with the right diet and exercise.


What is Green Tea?


Green tea is a beverage that is made from unfermented leaves that come from the Camellia sinensis plant which have undergone minimal oxidation while processing. It is pale in color with a slightly bitter flavor. The active components of green tea include polyphenols and catechins which act as powerful antioxidants. Epigallocatechin gallate or “EGCG” is its most powerful component which has proven to be therapeutic for many chronic conditions.

For centuries, green tea has proven its health benefits. Practitioners of Chinese and Indian medicine used the tea as an astringent, stimulant, and diuretic. Science has shown green tea may be helpful in treating the common cold and flus. More extensive research shows it to be beneficial for other health conditions:

In fact, science has proven green tea to be 100 times more powerful than Vitamin C and 25 times more powerful than Vitamin E.


Green Tea Dosage


Drinking green tea on a daily basis has numerous benefits for anyone. You may purchase either caffeinated or decaffeinated. For those who worry about their caffeine intake, you’ll be glad to know that one cup of green tea averages about 25 milligrams of caffeine. This equates to only a fraction of a cup of caffeinated coffee.
The Journal of American College Health reported that pronounced cardiovascular and metabolic health benefits can be obtained by regular consumption of five or more cups of green tea per day. More recent studies show that three to five cups per day will prevent cancer (particular breast cancer) and also has therapeutic effects with five cups or more per day.
You may also opt for an EGCG green tea extract in capsule form.


Side Effects of Green Tea


For most adults, green tea is safe. Higher doses of caffeinated green tea may cause headaches, nervousness, or sleeplessness – especially when taking the caffeinated form. If you don’t normally have caffeine in your diet, you may want to start with a lower dose and build up or choose a decaffeinated type.
